Last Friday’s game – the 9th February – saw seven goals shared between the two teams. Which were as follows:
Yellows: Simon Gas, me, Remy, Steve, Nick, Oleksandr, Alan, Morgan… and Chris
Blues: Marco Neuer, Geoff, Joe, Simon Ink, Johnnie, Will, Anatoily and Yev
After the usual jiggery pokery with the line-ups, we settled on Chris playing for the Yellow team, partly because Nick was late and partly because I’d already let in two goals before the full complement of players had been realised. The first goal was a header for a corner that Simon Ink steered in, although to be fair I could have tried a bit harder to save it – I think my brain was still stuck on the train between Cardiff and Paddington. Will crashed in another soon after, finding himself clear at the far post following some good work on the Blues’ right, while Yev squeezed in another goal soon after to give the Blues a 3-0 lead.
Thereafter the Yellows rebuilt – Simon Gas replaced me in goal, which staunched the bleeding at the back, while Oleksandr assumed the Quarterback* role for the Yellows and started pinging balls up to Morgan, or progressing the ball down the Yellows’ right. Chris’s rugby trained arms provided an effective weapon for launching balls into the box, although Marco’s commanding presence in goal stymied most of our arial threat.
Despite Marco, the Yellows gradually dragged the score back, with Alan getting a brace, his second coming from a nice move that saw Yev square the ball for the happy-go-lucky Irishman to drive home with his unfavoured right foot. These two efforts were sandwiched either side of Chris’s strike, but by this stage Will had extended the Blues’ lead.
To conclude: a good game, with Marco’s performance in goal probably being the deciding factor.
Final score: Blues 4 – Yellows 3
No pub for me this week as I was completely cream crackered after my trip to the Principality, but I expect it was all good fun. Until Friday!
