Good day, one and all and welcome back to the Coram Fields football blog, which has been on hiatus of late, (chiefly because I haven’t been playing). A late Spring run out in the sun last Friday saw these teams do battle:
Yellows: Steve, Bristol Paul, Danny, Bogdan, me, Morgan, Mick and Joe (eventually)
Blues: Simon Gas, Ed, Kanat, Alan, David, Josh, Anatoliy and Patrick
The first iteration of these line-ups contained not one, but two Dannys – begging the question what the collective noun for a group of Dannys would be – as I’d inadvertently gone Danny blind (Danny Blind?) when sorting the sides out. Kanat pointed out the error, and I do wonder if I should have tried duplicating him as well, given how the game panned out.
Onto the action then, and the Blues roared into a three-goal lead inside the first ten minutes, which they never looked like conceding. The Yellow team were a man light for this period, but dopey defending and a lack of urgency were as much to blame as anything else, with a highly avoidable own goal being the pick of the defensive howlers, as Mick and Danny left the ball to one another. (“Got it!”). Alan and Patrick, with a trademark run and unerring clipped finish, were the other early scorers.
After Joe pitched up the game became far more even, albeit there was an increasing clamour to amend the sides due to a perceived imbalance. Morgan got one back for the Yellows by closing down Simon Gas in goal and, in effect, tackling the ball home from all of about three inches.
Thereafter the Yellows restored their three-goal lead via Josh, before a penalty was awarded for a handball from Ed. Danny duly despatched the spot kick, although Kanat almost got down to get a hand to it. Danny also scored the Yellows’ other goal, with a Morgan providing him with the assist.
Ultimately, it felt that the Blue team always had a couple more gears to go through to ensure their lead was never seriously in jeopardy, and Patrick in particular (looking match fit) was always a potent menace from wide on the right, whether he drifted inside onto his left foot or fired in crosses with his right.
Final score: Yellows 3 – Blues 6
And so to a bumper turn out at the pub, as we all enjoyed the start of another Bank Holiday weekend and some much longed for sunshine. Topics under discussion included Phillip Scofield, the trip to Brussels in September, hair loss treatments, and other assorted guff.
Until Friday…
